A Clinical Observation on Head Injuries in Infants and Children



Abstract
A clinical analysis was performed on 238 cases of head injuries under 15 years of age, admitted to the department of neurosurgery, Korea University Hospital during the period from January, 1978 to December, 1982.
Following results were obtained :
1. There were 170 males and 68 females and sex ratio was 2.5: 1.
2. Age incidence of the accidents was mostly distributed to the age group between 6 to 12.
3. Seasonal peak of the accidents was in spring.
4. The head injuries were mainly caused by traffic accident (125 cases 52. 5%), fall from heights (99 cases, 41. 6%) and others (14 cases, 5. 9%).
5. Loss of consciousness before and after the admission was observed in 60 cases (25. 2%).
6. Vomiting was the most frequent symptom in children after head injury.
7. The location of skull fractures in the order of frequency were occipital, parietal, frontal and temporal.
8. The accompanying rate of skull fracture in intracranial hematoma was 60.6% in epidural, 50. 0% in subdural.
9. The overall mortality rate was 3.4%. Among the nonsurgical group (207 cases), the mortality rate was 1. 9% but in surgical group (31 cases) was 12.9%.
